Symbol of the Birch
Birch — generic name — from Celtic «btu» — a birch and form Latin «pendulis» — hanging.
The Latin name of a tree is Betula. On its basis is the word «batula», from a verb «batuere», translated as «to beat» or «to flog» as a reminder of a bitter destiny of some careless schoolboys in the past. In the European languages the majority of names of the birch springs from Indo-European «bhe» — that is light and sparkling.
Linguists connect the Russian name of the birch to a verb «to protect». It is caused by the fact that slavs regarded a birch as a gift of God, protecting the person. The birch in some traditions symbolizes light, shine, purity, feminity, etc. In Druids` traditions a birch is a tree of the beginning, a symbol of the first month of the year (December, 24 — January, 21). In Rome the birch attributes were used at assumption of the consul into the board. In Scotland the birch was related to dead people.
In the East Slavs mythology the birch was a sacred tree. It was esteemed as a female symbol during the spring holiday Semica — people brought the open trees into the settlement, girls put diadems form greens on the head. They made it for the likening of the girl to a world tree. The birch as a symbol of ritual purity is known also in German, Baltic and Central Asia traditions. Sometimes the birch appears in Russian incantations as a world, turned by roots upwards tree. The East Slavs` name «Beryeza» can be considered also as a sign of a Birch cult.
The use of the Birch for manufacturing of some ceremonial symbols had archaic sources. In the second part of the XIXth century people wrote applications to some wood ghosts on the birch bark and nailed them to the trees. The similar ceremonial role of runes with the value «birch» was known at ancient Germans. Their main God — Odin — has nailed himself to a world tree with a purpose to find a knowledge of runes. Probable, the existence of a special spirit of the Birch at East Slavs in an antiquity is similar to Prussian God Birzulis.
